Pending Futures

Existence in the “extreme present” and current historical and social urgencies demand immediate reactions. Group exhibition Pending Futures, showcasing the works by contemporary artists from the Netherlands and Russia is an empathic attempt to reflect on the general post-COVID tendency of slowing down and the theme of the so-called digital mantra, when online space becomes an agora displaying complexity and fragility of human conditions.

The Dutch-Russian dialogue in the field of art was out there for centuries. Dutch and Russian cultural scenes were linked to each other by a certain commonality of a number of factors – fragments of shared history and longstanding mutual cultural attraction. Currently, due to the new reality, it is time to revise it through the prism of works by young artists-students and alumnus of the most well-known art institutions in both countries, working with the cutting-edge media and topics.

Pending Futures presents works by contemporary Dutch and Russian artists, who are engaged in various new media: video, sound, 3D digital sculpture AI, CGI, motion graphics, 3D animation, creative coding, etc. Their works are going to research the existence of specific concepts, currents, modalities, which can help the digital space to become safe space, to transform it from the almost annoying necessity into a harmonious context for presenting the very core concepts in artistic discourse – new forms of self-representation, freedom, autonomy.
