Vladimir Potapov

Vladimir Potapov (born 1980) is one of the leading Russian artists of the middle generation, curator, theorist, and popular of contemporary art. He is well-known for his conceptual approach to painting medium, which resulted in a sequence of series, problematizing the surface, space and material of a contemporary painting. His studies of the essence of contemporary painting and its tasks in modern world and experiments with a technique resulted in many various series where “medium is the message”. Working with his favourite theme of memory and time, he makes the painting speak for itself: his images of events or portraits of the past either reveal spontaneously on a transparent surface by use of epoxy and charcoal, or scratched out of the layers of paint, or become visible from one particular point out of numerous fragments on a few sheets of plexiglas.

Vladimir gained a degree in The Volgograd State Institute of Arts named after P.A.Serebryakov. Later on, he graduated from the School of Contemporary Art Free Workshops, Moscow. Potapov was nominated for a number of major regional and international awards in contemporary art. He has participated as an artist and curator in dozens of group exhibitions. Recently Potapov had a personal exhibition in Kunsthalle Rostock (Only History Lies Ahead, Rostock, Germany), and in The Moscow Museum of Modern Art (From Memory, Moscow, Russia). His works are held in collections of Krakow Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCAK), Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Street Art in St. Petersburg and many others. Along with his artistic practice, Vladimir teaches contemporary art in world-famous Tretyakov Gallery. He is a regular author of theoretical articles of important art magazines.
