Ustina Yakovleva

Ustina Yakovleva (born in 1987) graduated from Moscow State Pedagogical University (Graphics Faculty, 2009) and in the same year graduated from the Institute of Contemporary Art, Moscow. Later followed art residencies in Russian Garage, Gridchinhall, NCCA in Kronstadt city, Zarya residency in Vladivostok, Vyksa AiR in Vyksa, as well PROGR residency in Bern, Switzerland. Ustina’s family roots stem from Russian North, where her grandmother and mother were born, and this has found reflection in her choice of media and served an endless source of inspiration and ideas. Ustina’s oeuvre is highly tactile and presents an intricate mix of  archaic Northern crafts and contemporary art: her artworks often combine traditional beadwork, needlework together with graphic and photography. Her art is timeless and stands far above the daily routine and politics, its narrative is void of clear subject, while creative process reminds of a pagan ritual.

Ustina does a lot of research on ethnic crafts in her region by studying traditional costumes, ritual artefacts and rites. This results in her mythical unearthly landscapes created on paper with almost one single line, biomorphic textile objects and organic images that shape her own ephemeral nature full of spirituality and mysticism. Her particularly feminine art and careful attitude to nature is highly spiritual and intuitive and that’s why almost impossible to describe in words. Ustina describes her artistic practice as follows: “I create works without sketches, as I am interested in self-forming composition as part of the creation process; drawing develops as a living organism, taking new forms throughout the work. Individual elements construct larger structures, like the atoms and cells construct the objects around us.”

The artist is a participant of numerous international group exhibitions in Russia, Finland, Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Her works have been showcased within such big public events as the main project of the 5th Ural Industrial Biennale of Contemporary Art and special projects of the 6th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, the 5th Moscow Biennale of Young Art, Manifesta 10 and many others. Ustina’s latest personal exhibition took place in Art Museum of Arctic Exploration in 2019.
