Alexey Vassiliev

Alexey Vassiliev (born in 1980) is a self-educated artist whose unusual artistic path extends from a math and physics teacher to a participant of numerous biennales and art shows in Russia and abroad. Alexey has developed his recognizable artistic manner reminiscent of Japanese manga and German expressionism, on the edge of graphics, painting and literature. His visual language is highly consistent and almost unchangeable throughout the years, as he stays away of particular community, context and momentary events. The prototypes for his grotesque characters are real people and their biographies and stories, which are often briefly described in long titles of the works. Portrait similarity is very arbitrary, while the emotion of a particular moment or situation is most important and find reflection in the subject and the title.

In his real and imaginary scenarios the line bears a great deal of message and idea: “I often and extensively use contrasting relations, sometimes extreme tones of black and white, with no halftones. Such relations ensure external catchiness and communicate internal tension. The image is deliberately flat, with no attempt at realism, only grotesque exaggeration. I refuse any illusory space and aim at simplified interpretation of a subject, its certain deformation. Line is an important aspect in my work and a carrier of the main message.  A sharp, rough, broken line can convey message better  than a subject. I’d prefer the language of the message be greater than a message, when the message itself turns out to be just some prelude or introduction into the manin act. It’s very dense, concentrated and chamber.”

Alexey’s works have been showcased in three editions of Biennale of Contemporary Art “Stop! Who’s Coming?” and group art exhibitions in New York, Tallinn, Beijing, Basel and Lisbon. His artworks are in public and private collections in Russia, Hungary, Germany, USA, Switzerland, Estonia and Sweden.
